Barry Gardiner MP, the Researcher and Israel
Labour MP Barry Gardiner, aside from being rather greedy with his expenses, was the Vice-Chair of the Labour Friends of Israel. However it seems that either Mr Gardiner has had a massive change of heart, a rethink of that friendship so to speak, or he doesn’t vet his new staff very well.
This is Joseph “Seph” Brown, Gardiner’s new Campaign and Communication Manager (nice title!) While Joseph was at LSE he was, rather ironically, the Anti-Racism Officer of their Student’s Union. He didn’t really practice what he preached though. As campus newspaper The Beaver reported in March:
“A senior Students' Union official has criticised the conduct of the Union's Anti-Racism Officer because of comments he made which allegedly intimidated a Jewish student.
Union Communications Officer Dan Sheldon said that Anti-Racism Officer Joseph Brown's behaviour during the occupation of the Old Theatre, when Brown referred to having "shot down a Zionist", was "unacceptable", "foolish" and "beyond belief".”
And that’s not just it;
"He even went so far as to pretend to hold a machine gun and said 'I loaded the bullets in, aimed, fired, and shot down that Zionist' (including the motions that go along with all those actions - and a huge smug smile on his face, searching for approval from the group).”
His colleagues at the student union were damning:
“It's about basic human civility, something Joseph Brown has failed to consider on more than one occasion. I am glad that he will not be leading the Students' Union next year, after being defeated in his sabbatical ambitions by such a large margin"
Although Gardiner was critical of Israel’s attempts to stop the Hamas rockets over the New Year, such disgusting behaviour and incitement of anti-Israeli violence can surely not be condoned? By a self-proclaimed friend of Israel?
It seems that Brown has been somewhat active in making his views about Israel known elsewhere. It is not known whether he was standing by the "Israel is Guilty of Murder” banner in his official capacity as a spokesmen for the LSE Palestinian Society, an organisation long suspected in London student politics or harbouring blatant pro-Hamas views. He clearly doesn’t agree with his boss though, who is critical of both sides, saying:
“Let me not try to hide my prejudices and affiliations. I voted for the Iraq war. I have always spoken out against terrorist violence and many years ago I became a vice-Chair of Labour Friends of Israel. I instinctively side with a democracy and I instinctively mistrust any organisation where old men load up women and children with explosive jackets and send them as suicide bombers to attack an “enemy” that includes other women and children.”
Scratch beneath the surface of the pro-Hamas Gaza , keffiyeh wearing, student occupations and again and again you find thinly veiled anti-Israeli and aggressive anti-Jewish sentiments. Why calling for Zionists to be shot not a barrier to employment in the party of government? Instead of being ostracised for his extremism, Joseph Brown has been welcomed in to the open arms of the Labour Party.
TB spoke briefly to "Seph" to check some facts earlier. When he called in again to put some questions to his boss, the office was mysteriously on answer phone.
At best Gardiner is dreadful at vetting candidates for jobs in his office, at worst well he has employed Brown knowing of his extremist views. He wouldn’t do that…
Would he?

I am a jew, and no great supporter of Israel or Hamas. However, I find your equating of Zionism with being Jewish distinctly distasteful.
You yourself seem to have little problem expressing a desire to carry out violence against those with political beliefs you disagree with. Zionism is a political viewpoint, not a race, and using the term effectively synonymously with being Jewish plays into the hands of anti-semites.
There are many problems with the pro-Palestine movement, but misrepresenting its members does it an injustice which can only make it more extreme.
I didnt use the two "effectively synonymously"
That is why there are clearly two separate things that i have mentioned:
"thinly veiled anti-Israeli AND aggressive anti-Jewish sentiments"

Joseph Seph Brown sounds horrific, but there are plenty of his type around. The irony of him being an anti-racism officer is enormous. Good article. Please let us know what Gardiner's response is.
Plenty of them in many SU's across the country, many in high ranking officer positions. In another 20 years time many will no doubt be aspiring Labour politicians working for quangos, left wing think tanks or trying to climb the greasy pole.
Of course his defence like many others would to label you a 'nasty right wing Tory fascist' if you dared question this.
If he wants to talk fascism we can talk Hamas. 'Seph' indeed! Sounds like a self-loathing 'Tory Boy'!
You don't have to scratch far below an "anti-zionist" to find an anti-semite tbh.
Sounds to me like this is some sort of Seph hunt. In the picture he is in a large crowd... doesn't mean he positioned himself next to a specific banner... And where did we get pro-hamas or anti-semitic from again? The fact that he was against the war on Gaza and owns a keffiyeh.... wow. Insightful reporting TB!
i have plenty more pictures.
the guy advocated shooting zionists ffs it doesn't get much more extreme than that.
watch this space. this one will role on.
TB
Any pictures showing his alleged anti-semitism? Bother asking for his position? Or did you just decide that random student journalists MUST be accurate... Brilliant.
where did i say anti-semitism? The palestinians are Semites dickhead, he seems pretty pro them.
Yes I am very suable hence why this story was checked with contacts within LSE SU and the UJS.
The fact that the only people defending him are hiding behind anonymous comments and thus completely uncontactable says a lot.
In fact, is that you Seph? Let's have a look at the IP log.
TB
Says the guy sitting behind an alias like Tory Bear and who has written to potential commenters "No referring to the identity of TB." Hmm, bright spark.
Also, "aggressive anti-Jewish sentiments" is anti-semitism. Regardless of your misplaced semantic reference to Palestinian semitic heritage. Quite an accusation since you have offered absolutely no basis on which to substantiate it. I'm not 'Seph', but hound me as well if you want. I am pro-palestinian too *shock horror*
What a wanker. Do these tits just pick a cause and rebel or what? I mean for fuck's sake what sort of a petty spoilt oik joins in with that milarky unless they are related somehow?
The unemployable, hand wringing bed wetting little runt needs a good kick up the arse.
I am stunned that there are still student unions! What the fuck do they have to complain about? Long holidays, cheap beer, short hours, fanny everywhere.. the little wankers ought to be told - "look, if you don't want to be here - fuck off".
Tail wagging dog? Lunatic running asylum?
Pasty faced, scrawny, spoilt little wankers.
"Sounds to me like this is some sort of Seph hunt."
"Any pictures showing his alleged anti-semitism? Bother asking for his position? Or did you just decide that random student journalists MUST be accurate..."
Go back to bed, Joe.
thinly veiled anti-Israeli and aggressive anti-Jewish sentiments
Vice versa, mate. Vice versa. The anti-Israeli sentiments are loud, aggressive and absolutely obvious. The Jew-hating is much more thinly veiled - after all, Seph doesn't hate all Jews, just the Bad Jews, the Zionist Jews.
"Seph"doesn't look like a bloke to me,thats a woman surely, perhaps it should be "Steff"
great, another palestinian 'sympathiser' done away with. soon we'll have a political system just like the american one where reasoned debate of the israel-palestine problem (effecting the safety of my children, incidentally) is so admirably and even-handedly conducted.
I thought he/she was Ruth Kelly.
Anon @15 September 2009 22:33, you must be on some other planet. You honestly believe there is a single place you cannot criticise Israel? If you really really wanted to be brave try going to Damascus and criticising the regime there or Gaza and attacking the Hamas gov or Hizbollah in Beka'a. Or you could join the people who stood up to the mullahs in Tehran.
Criticise Israel and the **worst** that will ever happen is someone calls you names.
Is that you Seph?
Nice one, Editor.
I think what he did clearly shows his true feelings and thoughts. Keep on him, Editor. Good work.
PS - Looking at the pictures of this 'Seph' makes me wonder if that's a typo? Surely it should be 'Steph'
