Mann Down

There is no denying that Nicolas Winterton is an idiot who the Tories can't be rid of soon enough. However TB was sure there was something wiffy about the attacks from Labour rent-a-thug John Mann. He said "second class seats are just as good as first class seats". "It is total nonsense that MPs, particularly in a recession, should regard themselves as a different kind of species,"
he told the BBC.

"MPs need to get out of this mindset that, somehow, we are above the general public, that we are special. Travelling second class keeps you in touch with the general public. It seems to me actually it helps MPs doing their job better." Fair enough.

However John Mann's constituency is Bassetlaw. The London connection is Gainsborough. A standard class return ticket from London, booked a day in advance, costs £127. So why do Mann's
expenses
show repeated claims for train fares between £230 and £260?

An open first class return costs £230.

There should be significantly more analysis of this type of shit TB.

Labour had their rapid rebuttal engine a few years ago. The Tories should have their "Seven types of Shit" machine up and running by now and it should hit back twice as hard as the original smear.

A little less Eton and a little more Mossad.

It looked suspicious when he referred to "second class"

Silly man. Always claim the maximum then no simple voter can tell what you are up to.

Perhaps he does travel Standard class... and pocket the difference?

Keep pluggimg away, perhaps the scandal is bigger than simply one of the standard Labour hipocracy?

The train to London is from Retford or Newark, not Gainsborough. Sorry, being picky.

There's only one ticket that cost more than £230 on that link?

There really is no train to London from Gainsborough, we struggle to get to Lincoln on the train!
He'll have to change at either Retford, Newark or Doncaster. The fastest connection would be Doncaster but that is also the furthest from Gainsborough, hence why it is more expensive than you "think" it should be.

There's no train from Gainsborough to Leeds TB - would have made my teenage years a hell of a lot more fun if there had been!

Also, sorry to disappoint but John Mann doesn't live in Bassetlaw, or Gainsborough, he lives in Leeds. Standard anytime return from Leeds to London is £223. Mystery solved...

Mann actually lives in North Wheatley, just a short drive from Retford which is his usual commuting station. He has been seen comfortably settled in First Class, including on the occasion when he sat in my friend’s pre-booked seat. My friend’s wife didn’t want him to make a fuss during the trip, but he introduced himself as they all alighted at Retford, as “the chap whose seat you’ve been parked in since London”. - Brings us right back to the question of costs vs claim values! Plus clearly no manners either Mr Mann!!!
