Abandon Ship

Apologies for the lack of posting recently, TB has been either a hungover or busy bear. Will attempt to rectify this next week, but frankly his time and writing energy is being spent elsewhere. He is tempted to say writing nothing is better than regurgitating a press release however CCHQ put out some interesting factoids this morning. Seems Gordon can't even garner the support of a full government. Since the swath of resignations last June, there have been twelve vacant Parliamentary Private Secretary places available. What was once the desirable first step up the ministerial ladder has been rejected by MPs refusing to serve and toe the government line. The following cabinet members do not have PPS and are thus lacking support to efficiently do their job:
Lord Drayson, Minister of State for Science and Innovation
Dawn Primarolo, Minister of State for Children, Young People and Families
Vernon Coaker, Minister of State for Schools and Learners
Rosie Winterton, Minister of State for Local Government & Regional Economic Development
Bob Ainsworth, Secretary of State for Defence
Phil Hope, Minister of State for Care Services
David Hanson, Minister of State for Policing, Crime and Security
Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development
Vera Baird, Solicitor General
Liam Byrne, Chief Secretary to the Treasury
Stephen Timms, Financial Secretary
Angela Eagle, Minister of State for Pensions and the Ageing Society
If the government can't even find members of its own party to support it, why should anyone else? Brown is so toxic these ferrets won't even taint themselves by serving at the lowest rung of his administration.

This government shouldn't be allowed to limp on until May, someone needs to take it round the back of the sheds with a shotgun right now.

I think you have to ask what benefit there is becoming a PPS right now:

1) They won't get anything done. There's no time and the Civil Service will back-pedal anything likely to be reversed post-election.

2) They don't get paid any more than an MP.

3) There's no hope of a ministerial post through it. There's no time to climb the ladder, and any surprise posts will be allocated on loyalty to Brown, not ability.

After reading Mr Watts expose about the ranks of the Labour Party and all the childish in-fighting, I'm not surprised.

Labour aren't fit to run a Jumble Sale, let alone a country - The General Election cannot come soon enough.

Good spot about the empty jobs but it's a shame if the Tory party's official line on this is that the government can't be doing its job properly unless all the posts are filled.

The story should be that it shows how much padding there has been in ministerial / PPS ranks - and these empty posts show how government could be cut back.

But perhaps the lure of using those posts as patronage to keep Tory MPs happy under any Cameron government is too great :-)

Old Stuff, TB. This snippet has been around since the Autumn. interesting to see that the problem is still around, though. you could always do a weekly summary - weeks since last filled. That would certainly keep twisting the barb.

"its" NOT "it's"

Amazing how we're at war, but Labour cannot find an MP willing to serve the Secretary of State for Defence....

I like the shotgun idea. Wound only though, so the suffering is prolonged. You know, like as if they'd been in Afghanistan or Iraq.

In the private sector, something similar would be a good addition to the CV, no matter how short the tenure.

It is obvious that taking a new position implies support for the Govt's lunacy. Would you do that?
