OUCA vs OUCF

The Mail is

reporting
that Oxford University Conservative Association have now been officially disaffiliated from the University after the accusations of racism at last year's election hustings. This is on the back of the the right-leaning Oxford Union
banning the society
from holding events on their premises too.

Interesting then that TB's sources have confirmed that an Oxford Conservative Future have been registered and will be recruiting freshers across the colleges. OUCA refused to affiliate with CF for years, just as many of the older university associations did not.

This split will be one to watch.

The Union hasn't banned any of the important OUCA events, just the tedious private ones. CF might attract some of the more earnest political types, but OUCA has always been more about drinking and fun, and will remain so.

Did anybody ever work out why OUCA and CUCA were allowed to be detached from CF yet long running associations at Kent and York were given no choice in the matter?

And that is precisely what is wrong with OUCA. Its focus is on the drinking, on expressing ridiculous (sometimes offensive) which are not sincerely held. It is a social group masquerading as a political organization.

It doesn't surprise me.

Racism contests are the refuge of parvenus and wannabe aristocrats. And OUCA is a breeding ground of parvenuism.

I can well recall the furore after one senior officer of the association remarked he didn't want "even more comprehensive school oiks running around and not knowing the difference between a sherry and a madeira", when he himself was covering up for being such an oik. He didn't even know what a sherry was when he first came up to Oxford.

It wouldn't surprise me if these racist johnnies weren't covering up for their own lack of breeding. One, I gather, was born in the former colonies - Philadelphia, no less.

Tim, York Tories are not in CF either - so they tell me.

Dear Donal - we York Tories are not affiliated with CF, although we were in the distant past.

Hope that clears up any issues

Its true, to be Succesful in OUCA I was told you need to be 'the right sort'. The wrong sort was pointed out to be a delightful Swedish conservative, because 1) she was foreign, 2) a woman and 3) Not a mason. That is the wrong way to run a society that trying to help create the next generation of Conservatives. They are creating the next generation of bed blocking Duck house claiming Mps. And these jokes weren't funny, they never are. The funniest one was a reference to Lord of the Rings, 'Never trust an Elf!' So yes, a conservative future might create an earnestness that might actually the Oxford tories a benefit to the local associations rather than a negative force.

these incidents were carried out by a small minority of members - who were then expelled. The vast majority of thec. 650 members, are active, good and reasonable people from all walks of life. There is a reason why OUCA is the 2nd largest Oxford Society and the largest single youth branch of conservatives in the entire country

OUCA is about drinking for most of the normal members, but the senior members seem fairly serious about political ambitions...

Isn't it curious how Oxford is banning only right-of-centre political groups? When I was there in the early 80's there were people on the left organising active violence against political foes, but the idea of expelling them from the university was never even considered.

OUCA has always been a largely social society.
